Correspondence, annotated scripts, work books, clippings, and diary documenting the literary career of Frances Guignard Gibbes Keith, from her youth in Columbia, S.C., to her studies in Cambridge, Mass., under the instruction of poet and dramaticist Josephine Preston Peabody; her early achievements in the staging of her plays at community theaters; national and international recognition for her poetry and dramatic writings, including her reception in France and England, ca. 1925, following publication of her poetry. Includes correspondence and clippings, ca. 1941, re arrangements for the stage and radio broadcast performances of her play, "The Face." Family correspondence includes letters, 15 Nov. 1860, Washington, D.C., P.B. McCalmont to his brother, re his cruise up the Potomac, impressions of Mount Vernon, and the divided opinion among Southerners he encountered in regard to secession, "[The South] regard[s] the election of Lincoln with a great deal of apprehension ... Some of the states will probably go out without stopping to see what he intends doing"; and 12 Nov. 1905, from J[ane] M[ason] G[ibbes], re her papal audience.

Peabody was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. After the death of her father in 1882, the family moved to Dorchester, Mass. She attended Latin School in Boston, and was a special student at Radcliffe College, 1894-1896. She published fourteen volumes of poems and verse plays, and lectured on poetry and literature at Wellesley College, 1901-1903. A pacifist and feminist, she joined the Fabian Society in 1909, and wrote a prose play, Portrait of Mrs. W. (Mary Wollstonecraft). She died in Cambridge, Mass. For ...
